Philadelphia day 6 – HALAL TRUCK

This past week, I began my rotations. It is time consuming but sometimes we are let out early. Today was one of those days – so I decided to go out again and help the homeless. I went to the halal truck because it is fairly priced, and they give huge portions. AND it comes with a drink. (also I like supporting local businesses like this)

Finding homeless people around the area is NOT easy sometimes. I actually ran into one of the homeless people I helped a while ago again – so he was happy to see that I had something for him once more. I had to drive around and finally found another homeless person walking around. I told the truck owner about my project and he was happy to endorse it – even offered me a free meal but I declined. Something I noticed today was that one of the homeless guys asked me for money even after I gave them this food. This just reinforces the notion that giving them help in the form of necessities ensures that they are being protected even from themselves (especially in the face of severe addiction).

New York day 1

we had a volunteer in NYC give out some food. Very glad to have this project spread to our neighboring city! We need as much participation as possible!!!! I am considering making a larger flyer using multiple sheets of paper combined for better photos. Any suggestions are welcome of course.

Philadelphia Day 5 – DUNKIN DONUTS

Today I decided to go to dunkin donuts. I received permission to get a little endorsement from them – and got a picture of the cashier holding the sign. I even received a slight discount because they loved the idea of giving to the homeless. I found two homeless people nearby and was able to speak with one. A few things became apparent – the organizations that are meant to help do not always work in their benefit: He was disqualified from eligibility because of his marijuana use. Also, the conditions in some of the shelters are actually so bad that he prefers to stay in the streets – the beds were infested with bed bugs (he had thousands of bed bug bites all over his body). In addition, it seems like mentally there were some hurdles for this gentleman to overcome as well. I hear a lot of criticism about helping the homeless in this fashion because people think that the organizations can help everyone better – but understand that a lot of people do not get helped by them for one reason or another. Also, these homeless people might potentially remain homeless indefinitely for the remainder of their lives… I am not here to fix their homelessness. You can not expect every single homeless person to overcome their addictions, spending habits, health problems, mental problems, immediate financial needs, and apply for a job and begin working right away. It is far more difficult than you can imagine. In the same way palliative care is meant to ease the suffering for terminal patients, these meals can ease the pain for some of these homeless people. It really is that simple.

Philadelphia Day 4

Today I went out after my rotations to give some food out. There is a location nearby I found that is pretty amazing – no additional parking and there are several restaurants all centralized. I found 3 homeless people, and one of them actually turned down the food saying that he wasn’t feeling that good (no matter how much I insisted).

There is something so personal about handing a meal and talking to someone who is homeless. This is much different than just donating a few bucks and forgetting about it. I am face to face with a person who may be having one of the worst days of his life and making it just a little better. I am a face showing this person that there is in fact another human being who cares. I made it clear that the money was from the internet and there is more to come.

Philadelphia day 3 + Future direction

I finished my last final exam of my life today. Another good time to celebrate by helping people. I think 2 meals per trip seems like a pretty sweet spot in terms of how easy it is to find/buy/give/park. I am still working with the donations from the first 2 days so I am very thankful for all of the support. I unfortunately left my flyer at home this morning because of the rush I was in, so that will have to wait until next time.

Since the last post, I also have found some supporters as you can see reflected in the new links I added. If you are interested in any sort of support from link exchanges to sponsorship – please feel free to contact me. Also be sure to follow on both instagram/twitter as they have been added as well.

As for the future, I am looking for the following:

  • A business/store in Philadelphia or South NJ that is willing to accept crypto for goods. Even someone who has a connection to one of these establishments would be appreciated.
  • Volunteers to help out with buying and handing out food in other cities around the country – I will reimburse. Even bigger plus if you are willing to accept crypto! Main requirement is that you take pictures and also use a provided flyer for the purpose of expanding this project.
  • Social media help – one example would be some help reaching out to places like the halal guys to get this project noticed and maybe sponsored (even a small sponsorship would go really far). Or if you know any well known public figures online – getting support from them would be great.

That’s all for now: pics from today.

Philadelphia day 2

So today, I decided to get something a bit better for the meals for the homeless. I was in a rush in the morning, because today was my first day of final exams. As a result, I failed to buy something in NJ once again. To make up for it, I stopped by halal guys (awesome place btw) and managed to risk getting a parking ticket in the process.

I also found a better location to find homeless people that are easily accessible (meaning I could temporarily park my car and run to them fast).

Today I had enough time to explain that “this food was from the internet” to them. Doubt they really cared much – but I will for sure print out some flyers or something and bring them with me next time.
That’s all for now, thanks again for the support!

Philadelphia day 1

So today is my final day of taking any school classes in my life. As an older student, this is not something I take lightly. What better way to celebrate than to help people out?

I think that one personal philosophy of mine is that the thing that makes us most human is doing the unnecessary. I’ve seen fully grown adults forget this and basically become insects focusing on survival and reproduction alone. There is something extremely sad about that.

Things I learned from today –

  1. Finding the homeless people first is always the best use of time. No use in buying food that will not be eaten.
  2. Parking in Philadelphia sucks. The reason why you see McDonalds in this instead of hoagies is that I couldn’t even find a good place like wawa available anywhere near with parking. Drive through for today – and buying from NJ before I go to Philly next time.
  3. Homeless people sometimes aren’t in the best of health – this means that when I do find them, I sometimes have to stop traffic and run out of my car to give them the meal. I don’t want to disrupt traffic like that, but today was an exception because I didn’t realize how horrendous the parking would be.
  4. I still have to decide what the best way to distribute food is. Today I decided to help 4 people with enough food for the whole day for each. But maybe if there are more people, I’d have to spread it thinner among them.
